Raised By a Narcissist: That Woman aka My Mother
A Memoir of Survival, Truth, and the Journey Back to Self
My lived experience of growing up with a narcissistic parent
Raised By a Narcissist: That Woman aka My Mother is my personal story of growing up under the emotional impact of a narcissistic parent. I share my experiences with honesty so you can see how small moments, subtle patterns, and repeated behaviours shaped the way I saw myself and moved through the world.
If you have ever felt unseen, controlled, dismissed, or blamed inside your own family, this memoir helps you put language to what you lived through. Many readers find recognition in these pages, as well as the strength to question old patterns and reconnect with the parts of themselves they learnt to hide.
I wrote this memoir to show the truth of what happens inside families where one person’s needs overshadow everyone else’s. You see the emotional confusion, the survival strategies, and the long-term effects that often follow children into adulthood. My story gives you room to reflect on your own experiences, recognise harmful dynamics, and understand why certain behaviours were never your fault.
What This Memoir Shares
Inside the book, I take you through real experiences that shaped my inner world, including:
• growing up under constant emotional pressure
• being blamed, criticised, or dismissed
• learning to hide feelings to stay safe
• navigating fear, confusion, and unpredictability
• recognising patterns years later as an adult
• beginning the slow, steady path toward understanding
You follow my story from childhood into adulthood as I start piecing together the truth of what happened and how it shaped my relationships, choices, and sense of self.
Why I Wrote This Memoir
For years, I believed the way I was treated was normal. I thought I was the problem. Writing this memoir helped me understand how deeply narcissistic behaviour can impact a child and why those wounds often stay hidden until much later in life.
Readers often share that my story helps them feel seen, understood, and less alone as they explore their own patterns. The intention is not to blame but to offer clarity. When you recognise the truth of what shaped you, healing becomes possible.
A Companion Journal for Deeper Healing

How This Memoir Supports Your Understanding
When you read my memoir, you step into the world I grew up in and see how small moments shaped bigger patterns. Many readers say it helps them understand why they think, react, or protect themselves in certain ways.
This perspective creates space for insight without shame. You are able to recognise your own experiences, name what was happening around you, and reflect on how those early dynamics continue to influence your life today.
My story gives you room to explore these connections at your own pace.
Why This Book Matters
You deserve clarity and the freedom to live in a way that aligns with who you are. Raised By a Narcissist: That Woman aka My Mother, offers more than my story. It gives recognition to anyone who grew up feeling unheard or blamed. It helps you understand the truth of what shaped you and offers steady support as you begin to see yourself with more honesty and care.

Christine –
A brilliant book detailing the struggles of having a narcissistic mother and how to overcome it. Excellent.
Simon Allen –
Raised By a Narcissist is a heartfelt memoir from the author that serves to allow her to come to terms with the unreconcileable breakdown of her relationship with her mother. Rather than being used as vehicle to attack her mother, the author relates stories from their lives together and in laying them bare takes us on a journey of her own personal healing. The purpose of which is to offer hope to readers that may have had similar experiences in their lives. The author’s skillful use of anecdotes and descriptions of her experiences with her mother throughout her childhood, and into her own time as a mother and grandmother, paint an evocative and emotive picture of their relationship. The reader is left with a sense that any bitterness harboured by the author towards her mother earlier in her life has left her by the process of writing this memoir. In doing so, Serena Bennett offers a message of hope and healing to the reader.

A concise account of a demoralising situation to be in, especially as a child. The book simply but clearly brought attention to an Adults possibly suffering trauma cascading it down on their vulnerable children. What Serena went through emotional, mentally etc could not be encapsulated in one book. But you are given a clear sample of what life was like under the shadow of an inept parent. To survive, function and not repeat the cycle of behaviour is an uncommon achievement that all can learn from. An excellent account leaving you wondering “What more, what more were u feeling, experiencing Serena ? “
